The Ghost of Richard Daley • Preserving as Opposed to Creating Political Discord

Editor's Note: Back in 1968 as American involvement in the Vietnam War was escalating and Eugene McCarthy ran as a Democratic Presidential candidate promising to end this corrupt conflict, his strong showing in the primary races caused President Lyndon Johnson to remove himself from the race, which resulted in Vice-President Hubert Humphrey being selected over McCarthy at the 1968 Democratic National Convention - similar to the way Kamala Harris was - by a process of acclimation at this year's Democratic Convention. This attempt to suppress the will of delegates and constituents at the 1968 Democratic Convention resulted in the infamous 'Days of Rage' when then Chicago Mayor Richard Daley used police force to keep protesters out of the Convention, in a riotous blood bath that dwarfed the so-called January 6th 'insurrection' at the Capitol both in scope and magnitude. Sadly, 56-years later, the Democratic Party has morphed into the polar opposite of what it once stood for, embracing a pro-war posture instead of an anti-war stance; promoting censorship over the free-flow of information; and attempting to keep Robert Kennedy on the ballot in swing states after seeking to block him and other actual candidates from the same ballots - all in the name of democracy. The author of this piece, Jonathan Turley, is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University and the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.”
